Brother MFC-J4710DW Printer Reviews-The Brother MFC-J4710DW all-in-one inkjet looks to meet every printing need that a small office might have at an affordable price.

Along with fast output speeds and print operations, fax, copy and scan in four directions, supports USB, wired and wireless connections, and can even print on A3 paper.

For A3, there is a rear manual feed slot and a low paper tray that can be extended. This is not the most elegant design, because you have to unlock and extend the tray and turn the cover in front of the top A4 tray to support your printout.

The rest of the all-in-one is designed wiser. The 20-page ADF for duplex scanner is hidden neatly under the top cover, while the USB port and Ethernet hide under the scanner unit. The color LCD touch screen – which provides access to the printer’s scan, copy and fax functions – can be rotated forward.

You can set the wired or wireless mode from here, but you cannot activate both of them simultaneously. We tested it with a cable connection, and had no problems installing the Brother MFL-Pro Suite drivers and software on a Windows 7 PC.

The Control Center 4 utility is part of the series, and provides many tools to access the copy, scan, OCR, and fax functions from the desktop. You can use it to link scanning operations directly with local applications, activate copies of documents remotely, and access printer settings, including 100 entry fax address books.

The printer web interface provides full access to all settings, and is used to create profiles to scan to FTP servers and share networks. Pop the storage device into the USB, SD or Memory Stick slot on the front and you can browse photos and choose which one to print. You can also set up connections to cloud services from web UI, including Google Picasa, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft SkyDrive.

Claimed print speeds – 37ppm for mono and 27ppm for color – cannot be achieved in our tests. A 35-page basic Word document, printed in Fast mode, produces 21 ppm. Our 24-page color DTP prints averaged 10.6 ppm in Fast mode, 7 ppm in Normal and only 1.2 ppm in Best. The copy speed using the ADF is also slow, with a five-page copy in Normal mode producing 5ppm in mono and 4ppm in color.

The output quality is also not good. Text on plain paper is rather blurry, and although mono photos show many details, they are pale and lack contrast. The photos on glossy paper are much sharper, with bright colors and fine details, although a few edges and edges appear occasionally.

The lowest printing costs are achieved with high-yield ink cartridges, which provide mono pages for 1.7p and one color only more than 5p. However, we received a low yellow ink alert after printing only 160 pages, including ten A4 and five A3 poster color photos.
