Brother Printer Reviews– Monochrome printers start at less than 100 pounds and the basic model in the Brother range is the HL-2130, which can only be used for just over € 80. For this, you get a basic personal laser, but very useful for the home or small office.

This is a very discreet small printer, in a light gray box. Basically, the cuboid has large vertical spokes on the front and rear, which gives it a modern, if slightly busy look. The top surface has a sharply trimmed output tray with a folding paper stopper at the front and a secondary tab further back, whose only apparent function is to lift the stack of output paper for ease of handling.

To the left of the output, the tray is a simple control panel, consisting of four toner LEDs, drum, and other errors, a ready light and a Go button whose main function seems to be printing a demo page.

The main paper tray can carry up to 250 sheets, which is a healthy provision on a small machine like this, but there is also a single sheet feed slot for the special media above, where you can feed envelopes and sizes of foreign paper. On the back is a single USB socket, the only data connection in the printer.

There is not much software supplied with the HL-2130, but graphics drivers (GDI) are provided for Windows and OS X. Although there are no Linux drivers on the supplied CD yet, there is at least one option in the setup menu Leads directly to the Brother support pages, where you can download the appropriate driver.

We think it’s time for Linux drivers to be included on the software driver disks of all printer manufacturers. Although there are many Linux distributions, a surprising number use common controllers and include them in the support disk would make the installation simpler and Linux clients feel less like poor relationships.
