Brother HL-2070N Printer Reviews– If you need a low cost personal laser printer and want the convenience of sharing it in a small office or connecting it to a home network, the Brother HL-2070N ($ 200 street) may be right for you. The graphics and the quality of the photo are disappointing, but if you are looking for a monochrome laser, it is most likely that you are more interested in the text. And its text quality is excellent.

The installation is easy. The HL-2070N weighs only 14.3 pounds and measures 6.5 by 14.6 by 14.2 inches (HWD), which makes the physical configuration a breeze, and the automated network installation put us into operation with little effort. In many ways, the HL-2070N is a variation of the Brother HL-2040. It uses the same printing engine, with an input capacity of 250 sheets (which is both standard and maximum) and like the HL-2040, adds the convenience of manual feeding of a sheet of paper. The HL-2070N, however, is not simply the HL-2040 with an added network connector. It has more memory and, more importantly, it processes the print job in the printer, instead of making your computer do the work.

Given these differences, we were a little surprised to see that the two had almost identical times, test for trial, in our suite of business applications (timed with the QualityLogic test hardware and software, www.qualitylogic.com). The total time of the HL-2070N was 7 minutes and 56 seconds, compared to 8:02 for the HL-2040.

For the photos, the HL-2070N was slower than the HL-2040. Its larger memory allows it to print at a higher resolution, which means much more data to process. Unfortunately, the increase in resolution does not translate into a more attractive exit. The photos and graphics obtained the same rating at the upper end of the poor; We saw serious problems with dithering and posterization, among other issues. However, the text was excellent, with most sources easily readable in 4 points, and none required more than 8.

A final problem is that, as with the HL-2040, the pages tend to curve. Brother says he will fix this in future production runs. Once you do, if you are primarily interested in printing text, the HL-2070N will be worth considering. Until then, however, you may want to refrain from making a decision.
